Garmin Nuvi Series Overview
Garmin began producing their Nuvi series several years ago, providing drivers and travelers with portable navigation systems that work as a stand-alone product with features preloaded. There are many types of models on the market within the series that include different functions depending on the individual model as well as features that can be added.
Models within the Nuvi series have changed and evolved since one of the original Nuvis – The Nuvi 200 series – was produced in 2007. Originally screens were smaller at about 3.5 inches. They were also heavier, larger models. As more models have been produced, the trend has moved towards wider screens (about 5 inches) that are much slimmer and lighter, making it more convenient to transport. One of the later models, the 3700 series which was introduced onto the market in June 2010, is one of the thinnest models to have been produced at 9mm.
The Nuvi series has become far more unique with specialized features since the original models as well. The 465T series, for example, was designed more specifically for truckers and was introduced onto the market in March 2009. In 2008 Garmin also produced the 500 series that could be used by cyclists, hikers, boat and sailing enthusiasts as well as drivers. While standard functions come with most models in the Nuvi series, like points of interest, others can be downloaded. Bluetooth, the device speaking out the street name, lifetime map updates, multi-point routing, speed limit display, voice command, MP3 player and traffic trends depend on the actual model within the series.
Added features that can be downloaded come in a variety of options. City Xplorer is a function that allows a Garmin Nuvi user to navigate a foreign city with detailed maps and information. Available for Africa, South America, North America, Europe, Asia and Australia, City Xplorer gives points of interest that direct the user to important places like a police station, fuel stations or hospitals. Transport services are also included on the maps as well as the nearest restaurants and shopping malls. Garmin Travel Guides can also be used as an extra function by plugging in an SD card. The guides give more detailed information about attractions and travel information.
Garmin Nuvi accessories have also become more innovative in the last few years. There are now mounts for models in the Nuvi series that can be attached to a car windscreen, a dashboard, a vent, a light socket or even a cup holder. Devices can also be mounted onto the handlebars of a bicycle. Other accessories include the cases that Garmin Nuvis are carried in, where some even come with a screen protector kit. These are available in different colors and can be a hard or soft protective case.
Because of all of the upgrades and changes to the devices in the Nuvi series, it is important that maps are updated regularly as a device from 2009, for example, may already have old map information. This can hinder a person’s journey as well as put them in danger if crucial information like the position of a police station is inaccurate. Some of the newer Garmin series come with lifetime map updates but otherwise the user needs to check on the Garmin website to see if there are any new maps available for their Nuvi by punching in the unique serial code.
